Dr. Anthony J. Costa is an FRCSC certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty interest in knee and shoulder related conditions, as well as experience managing most other general orthopedic conditions. Dr. Costa has extensive operative experience with single- and multi-ligament knee reconstruction, patella realignment surgery, osteotomies of the femur and tibia, meniscal repair and transplant, cartilage restorative procedures, primary and revision knee arthroplasty, as well as rotator cuff surgery and procedures for shoulder instability.

 

Dr. Costa graduated from the University of Western Ontario Schulich School of Medicine in 2006, and completed his orthopaedic residency training at the University of British Columbia from 2006-2011. From 2011-2012 he undertook further subspecialty fellowship training in orthopaedic knee-related surgery and lower extremity trauma at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. From 2012-2021, he worked at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia in Prince George BC, practicing general orthopaedics, with a focus on both simple and complex knee related conditions, as well as general orthopaedic trauma. During his years in Prince George, Dr. Costa also worked closely with his practice partner and wife, Dr. Denise Mackey (an orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in shoulder reconstruction), to hone his skills in shoulder reconstruction.  Dr. Costa is fully licensed to practice in both Alberta and British Columbia, and holds faculty appointments as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia, as well as Clinical Lecturer in the Cumming School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Curtis Myden is a Royal College Certified sports and knee surgeon specializing in arthroscopic and open surgeries for knee, shoulder, elbow and sport-associated conditions.  He also has an interest in Pediatric Orthopedic conditions

Dr. Myden completed his medical degree and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Calgary. Dr. Myden completed fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedic surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia and Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy at the University of British Columbia.  Dr. Myden started his Orthopedic practice in 2013 in Kelowna, BC, specializing in sports medicine Orthopedics with a focus on knee injuries. Dr. Myden has worked the past 5 years in the Yukon Territory and BC. He was the first resident Orthopedic Surgeon in the Yukon territory and primary surgeon to create the resident orthopedic service in the Yukon Territory.

Dr. Jesse Slade Shantz is the founder of Acumen Clinic practicing at Okanagan Surgical Centre and Canadian Surgical Solutions. His practice focuses on disorders of the shoulder and sports-related injuries.  He has fellowship training in orthopaedic trauma at The University of California – San Francisco and shoulder and sports disorders at the University of Toronto in addition to his orthopaedic residency training at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Slade Shantz is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Board Eligible. He is licensed to practice in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.  Dr. Slade Shantz has a special interest in soft tissue injuries related to traumatic causes, an interest that he pursued in a fellowship and an additional year of research at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, the Arthroscopy Association of North America and he is a reviewer for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research and the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma. Dr. Slade Shantz is a member of the Canadian Society of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Don Dick

Dr. Don Dick is a practicing orthopaedic surgeon in the Edmonton Zone. His practice focuses on hip and knee replacements through the Edmonton Musculoskeletal Centre and the Orthopaedic Surgery Centre – Royal Alexandra Hospital.

He divides his time between clinical medicine and healthcare administration. He has had numerous leadership positions in bone and joint health – locally, provincially and nationally. He is presently working part-time for Alberta Health Services in Appropriateness and Health Outcome Analysis.

Dr. Dick is an expert in his field and served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association and in the past was the President of Alberta Orthopaedic Society.His area of orthopaedic interest is in the lower extremity and paediatrics.

Dr. Graeme Matthewson

Dr. Graeme Matthewson was born and raised in Winnipeg. He graduated medical school at the University of Calgary. He was always very active with sports, as well as strength and conditioning which led him to orthopedics. Dr. Matthewson completed a fellowship in Sports Surgery at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute – Los Angeles and training in upper extremity arthroplasty  in San Fransisco, in addition to his orthopaedic residency training at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Matthewson is a reviewer for BMC Musculoskeletal Medicine, Case Reports in Orthopedic Research and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. His current practice focuses on minimally invasive and open procedures of the shoulder and hip. 

Dr. Matthewson has also completed the McGill low back pain series of certification and has extensive training in movement assessment and non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. He has expertise in integrating the isolated into a broader picture. He enjoys taking a focal injury, such as the lower back and determining the contributing factors and how to prevent further injury by addressing such things as  movement patterns and postural awareness.

Dr. Rachel Schachar

Dr. Schachar is an Orthopaedic Surgeon certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and member in good standing of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Dr. Schachar received her medical degree from the University of Calgary in 2008 and completed her residency in Orthopaedic surgery at the University of Calgary in 2014. She went on to complete Orthopaedic surgery subspecialty fellowships in sport medicine and shoulder reconstruction, at the University of Toronto in 2015, and with the Banff Sport Medicine Group 2016. Prior to medical school, Dr. Schachar received a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Health Physiology and a Master of Science degree in Skeletal Muscle Biomechanics.

Dr. Schachar has published in a number of peer reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy. She has been involved in undergraduate medical education at the University of Calgary as an instructor in the musculoskeletal undergraduate curriculum and as a mentor in the medical student mentorship program.

Her clinical practice includes non-surgical management and rehabilitation for a variety of musculoskeletal issues with a focus on sport medicine and shoulder injuries, as well as Orthopaedic trauma surgery. Additionally, she plays an integral role as a surgical consultant to execute the Workers Compensation Board shoulder surgical review program in Calgary. She has four years of experience doing independent medical examinations and medicolegal work, with some trial experience. She has a special interest in motor vehicle accidents and occupational injury.

Cayla Galarneau

Mrs. Cayla Galarneau graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in Kinesiology in 2009 and became a Certified Athletic Therapist in 2010. Her practice involves the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. She provides conservative options and rehabilitation expertise in surgical consultations. Her practice focuses on knees and shoulders but has experience in treating the hips, ankles, sacroiliac joint, low back and neck.

Mrs. Galarneau is a certified Functional Capacity Evaluator through Metriks Education and completed the certification in medico-legal expertise course. She has experience working in a provider site based return to work program with WCB patients. There she performed functional testing on a regular basis for patients in the program and Functional Capacity Evaluation testing for those entering into a program. She was an employer representative for Alberta Health Services and Calgary Board of Education to perform physical demands analysis and coordinate return to work planning. Mrs. Galarneau performs the Independent Medical Examinations with the Orthopedic Surgeons here at Acumen.   

Dustin Oranchuk

Dustin Oranchuk completed his bachelors degree in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary in 2013, becoming a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association soon after. Between working with teams and individuals, Dustin completed his Masters of Science at Adams State University in 2016, and his Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) at the Auckland University of Technology in 2021. 

Dustin specializes in strength and conditioning for performance and rehabilitation, testing methodologies, and disseminating scientific findings. Additionally, he has a wealth of experience working in integrated support teams with Athletic Therapists, Medical Doctors etc. to optimize treatment and recovery. Dustin has also published 33 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles in the areas of sports science, strength and conditioning, exercise physiology and orthopeadics.
